One of the most effective way to reduce road traffic noise is by building noise barrier. From the observation around Johor Bahru, many of old and damage barriers are not replaced and left without maintenance. This raises the question whether the existing noise barrier especially those in bad condition are able to reduce the road traffic noise. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of existing noise barrier in reducing noise level from road traffic. The objectives of this study are to; determine traffic noise reduction for doubling distance due to free field, assess the reduction by barriers, and evaluate insertion loss and the effectiveness of existing noise barrier. Three types of existing noise barriers were used for this study; i. Perforated Noise Barrier, ii. Reflecting Concrete Noise Barrier, and iii. Reflecting Steel Noise Barrier. Free field condition near the tested noise barrier were measured. To assess the insertion loss, measurements were carried out at 0.5m in front and at back of the noise barrier. Factors that affect the efficiency were observed and recorded. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of noise barrier, comparison was made between Sound Pressure Level (SPL) at free field conditions and SPL with the present of noise barrier, and also at specific point of 6m behind the barrier. Result showed that traffic noise reduced by 3 to 4 dBA when the distance is doubled. With the present of noise barrier, this free field noise was cut by barrier between 4 to 11 dBA. Concrete Noise Barrier has the highest reduction (11.9 dBA), followed by Steel Noise Barrier (9.9 dBA) and Perforated Noise Barrier (4.4 dBA). The location and condition of Perforated Noise Barrier are the reason for the lowest sound reduction values. However, at 6 m behind barrier, Steel Noise Barrier has highest insertion loss (10.7 dBA), followed by concrete barrier (10.2 dBA) and perforated (7.9 dBA). Thus, all barriers were effective in reducing traffic noise at 6m behind barriers as insertion loss were between 5 and 12 dBA zulaihi UTM 76 p.
