The fire has been used in human daily life as sources for heating, cooking and others. In chemical term, fire is the result of a chemical reaction which known as a combustion. However, fire also can bring harm to the surrounding if the used of it not be controlled by a human. Fire can lead to the injury, loss of life and property. There are many cases that involving fire in the big type of building such as factory, hospital and houses. In order to minimize the loss of life and the property, all type of building needs fire retardant door in order to withstand the spread of fire for a given time. In order to make sure the door is made from heat and fire retardant material, there are various standard from different countries that provide the guidelines for specification of the fire door. The fire door material must follow the specification of the standard. The objective of this study was to find the fire resistance rating of rice straw mixture with gypsum composite. To conduct this dissertation experimentally, the sample of four different compositions with three different thickness has been prepared. The three different levels of thickness were prepared by following the standard of ASTM E-119 which are 6.4 mm, 9.5 mm and 12.7 mm. The composite samples of four different compositions, namely 500g of gypsum : 0g of rice straw, 490g of gypsum : 10g of rice straw, 480g of gypsum : 20g of rice straw and 470g of gypsum : 30g of rice straw. All the apparatus and experiment were done accordance to the MS 1073 : Part 2 :1996. The experimental results show that sample with 500g of gypsum and 0g of rice straw of thickness 12.7 mm has the highest fire resistance rating of 60 minutes and the lowest fire resistance rating is 30 minutes from 6.4 mm thickness with the composition of 480g of gypsum and 20g of rice straw. From this experiment, the result for the composition of gypsum with rice straw shows that the mixture of rice straw and gypsum has a potential to be used as a material in the building construction such as fire door and ceiling zulaihi UTM 78 p.
