Ariffin, supervisor Civil engineering Also available in printed version Bamboo is an evergreen plant that has been used as a construction material. It is known as a giant grass that has fast growth property. If bamboo is to be compared with other woods materials, bamboo takes only 4-6 years to grow and can be harvested 2-3 years later while trees usually take 20-50 years before they can be harvested. Due to lack of knowledge and official standard on the compressive strength of bamboo, the versatility of this material has always been neglected. This study was carried out to make further investigation on the compressive strength of bamboo and bamboo infill mortar. This study involved only one type of bamboo which is Bambusa Vulgaris. Based on previous research, Bambusa Vulgaris was found out to be one of the species that had high compressive strength. All the bamboos that were used in this study were already been treated. The compressive strength was tested on various parts along the culm of the bamboo where each of them was cut into three parts. Other than that, the compressive strength test was also conducted on mortar cube samples to determine the suitable mix proportion of the mortar that can give strength at least 30 MPa. Based on the results, it shows that the optimum or suitable mix proportion for mortar that can be used is 1:3. Other than that, it also shows that the compressive strength of bamboo along the culm is increasing. The bottom part has lower compressive strength when compared to the top part. The results show that bamboo infill mortar has higher compressive strength compared to bamboo without mortar. Thus, this study shows that the compressive strength of bamboo is good and is comparable with other existing materials. It can be used as one of the construction material. Bamboo also can be the substitute for other distinct material in construction industry which indirectly can facilitate the environment zulaihi UTM 78 p.
