Exposure to the noise above the standard level can give workers permanent hearing loss. Although the hearing loss effect does not come out suddenly, however it will give early symptoms to the workers. The aim of this research is to evaluate noise level conducted in construction site during sub structure activities. The objectives are to obtain sound intensities of machines during sub structure activities, to measure noise exposure among machine operators during sub structure activities, to assess the noise level during sub structure activities including to predict the sound power level during sub structure activities. Three sub structure activities were selected for the case studies. The noise intensities machineries during sub structure activities were measured. The noise exposures experienced by the operators of machines were then obtained and the results were compared with the permissible limit by Malaysia Regulation (1989). The noise level emitted by sub structure activities were collected at several point in site with interval of 15 minutes and at the same time prediction were also carried out at specific points. The study showed that types of activities during sub structure phase and number of activities conducted affected the noise emission levels. The results showed that most of the machineries used in sub structure have high sound intensities of 90 to 114 dB(A) for 8 hours (very high risk to hearing impairment). While the noise level in sub structures were between 80 to 89 dB(A). the prediction using BS5228 produced disparities on highway construction, where the size of the site was smaller and less buffer in the barricade site and followed by the higher background noise from the nearby road. Management team need to be aware with this situation if prediction is being applied at planning stage for providing workers safety protection regarding to the noise exposure fahmimoksen UTM 84 p.
