Rosli Hainin, supervisor Civil engineering Also available in printed version Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is a conventional mixture that is commonly used in Malaysia. Production of HMA requires high temperature thus produces high carbon dioxide (CO²) emission and gives bad impact to the environment. Characteristic of HMA are also effected by weather. During the construction, cool weather is one of the factor that can influence the temperature of HMA mixture. It will reduce the mixture temperature during compaction. Warm mix asphalt (WMA) is one of the methods to overcome this issue. Even though HMA mixture is produced at higher temperature, the rate of cooling is high. Therefore, this study focused on evaluating the performance of HMA and WMA related to the compaction design (75 blows, 50 blows and 35 blows). The types of mixture used were HMA and WMA with 14 mm nominal maximum aggregate size. The oil based additive used in WMA was Cecabase. This study was conducted at Kg Ayer Merah, Mersing where real time temperature and density were measured during construction. Rate of cooling, degree of compaction (DOC) and rutting performance of mixtures were analyzed. The results showed that rate of cooling for both HMA and WMA mixtures gave better results as the number of compaction was decreased. The slope of graph of rate of cooling for WMA mixture with 35 blows has the lowest rate of cooling compared to HMA mixture with 35 blows which was 0.33 and 0.51 respectively. Meanwhile, for DOC, both HMA and WMA showed DOC increased as number of compaction increased. DOC for WMA mixture with 75 blows was better compared to HMA mixture with 75 blows which was 99.04 % and 96.57 % respectively. Lastly, for rutting performance, HMA mixture with 75 blows gave highest stiffness modulus which is 30.00 MPa compared to WMA mixture with 35 blows which is 6.00 MPa. In overall, HMA mixture is more susceptible to fatigue cracking but less susceptible to rutting compared to WMA mixture. Further laboratory and site studies are needed to attain more reliable results in order to promote WMA fahmimoksen UTM 99 p.
