The objective of this study is to determine the effect of heat treatment on the microstructures and corrosion behavior of welded joint between 316L stainless steel and low carbon steel. In this study, the 316L stainless steel filler metal was used. The Gas Tungsten Arc Welding was used to weld the base metals. The welded samples then were treated between the temperatures of 400-800ºC followed by quenched in water. The base and welded samples were analyzed by using various materials characterization techniques namely, optical metallographic, field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS) and X-ray diffraction. Line scan across the interface of base material and filler metal to determine the migration of elements such as Cr, Ni, C and Fe after heat treatment. There is no significant effect of heat treatment on the migration of nickel and chromium element across the interface. Micro-hardness test was conducted on the samples in order to determine the relationship between hardness profile of samples without heat treatment and samples which undergo heat treatment process. The hardness is higher at the HAZ between low carbon steel and weld metal. The corrosion behavior of this dissimilar welded joint was investigated through the salt spray test and electrochemical test. 3.5% NaCl and 5% NaCl, to stimulate seawater condition, were used for electrochemical test and salt spray test. It was found that the low carbon steel base metal was corroded. The 316L stainless steel base metal was not affected by the corrosion product due to higher chromium element atiff UTM 120 p.
