Wahab Khairul Anwar Hanafiah, supervisor Mechanical engineering Also available in printed version The purpose of this project is to build a motorized flying machine that can fly up to the air from the ground by flapping its wings. Background research which consists of literatures on bird and insect physical and flight characteristics must be studied to understand the flight parameter that used by flapping wings mechanism. Besides, there is a need to understand the basic of aerodynamics condition and flight principle such as Bernoullie抯 principle and kinematic of flapping theories. Background research is conducted to perform Product Design Specification (PDS). By referring to PDS, functional assessment and verbs will be separated into several simpler mechanism. In Concept Generation, the several simpler mechanisms are plotted into Morphological chart. Morphological chart will combine several mechanisms to form into one conceptual design. There are at least five conceptual designs presented in concept generation phase. In Concept Selection, all conceptual designs will be evaluated with various criteria and weightage. The evaluation is performed by using Pugh抯 scoring matrix. The conceptual design with the highest score will be selected to undergo the initial detail embodiment phase. In Detail Embodiment, the selected conceptual design will form into an exploded view with bill of material. Material for every components and parts will be determined in the same phase. Manufacturing cost also been conducted to determine the estimated manufacturing cost for the flying machine. Failure Mode and Effect Analysis is performed for Engineering Analysis. Fabrication also was conducted for testing purpose on the flying machine. Final design of a motorized flying machine which uses flapping wings for propulsion will be presented. In the end of the project, there are several recommendations for improvement of this project. fahmimoksen UTM 111 p.
