This industry keeps growing each year and resulting in the increment number of palm oil mills. When the palm oil mill effluent (POME) was not effectively treated this could imposed adverse impact to the river water quality. Due to the increasing number of palm oil mills, the needs to provide more effect, cheap and reliable treatment system for treating POME is in great demand. MBBR treatment system is commonly used to treat municipal wastewater. However, there are only a few studies that had been conducted using this treatment system for treating POME. Therefore, this study was conducted to fill this gap knowledge. Two laboratories scale MBBR treatment system were set up and bioball was used as the biofilm carrier. The tank that was filled with bioballs is known as experiment reactor and reactor that was without bioball acted as control system. The aim of the study was to investigate the removal performance of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nutrients in treating POME using MBBR system. The sludge and POME were collected at a facultative pond in FELDA Bukit Besar palm oil mill. Both of the reactor systems were operated with hydraulic retention time of 48 hours. The results obtained from this study were very unstable and unpredictable. Except for the removal of ammoniacal nitrogen (AN), the experimental reactor showed higher average removal percentage of AN (70.2%) compared to the control system (64.3%). Based on this study, the application of bioball is not effective and unsuitable to be used as the biofilm carrier. widya UTM 75 p.
