As most of water movement at pavement surface occurs under unsaturated condition, it is important to understand the mechanics of water flow through unsaturated pavement system. This study would help in understanding the water seepage pattern through unsaturated pavement system by using a software known as SEEP/W. The variables of the study include different types of subgrade soils and various water infiltration rates. The types of soil involved in the parametric study were clay, silt and sand. Three different infiltration rates that were used in the simulations were 1 x 10-8 m/s, 1 x 10-7 m/s and 1 x 10-6 m/s. Steady state and transient state analyses were carried out in order to obtain the water seepage pattern through the pavement system. The fine-grained soils in subgrade layers were found to be subjected to mounding of water table which would joint with the wetting front from the water infiltration, subsequently increase the pore-water pressure below the pavement layer. On the other hand, the coarse-grained soils have lower ability to store water and could drain water faster. Soils with low hydraulic conductivity and higher ability to store water would cause the mounding of water table with infiltration regardless of low rainfall intensity. Furthermore, soils with low hydraulic conductivity which result in slower rate of the seepage flow through the soil body, causing the mounded water table to drop back to its initial position in longer period. widya UTM 92 p.
