Thus, the purpose of this study is to formulate a statistical reasoning assessment framework in descriptive statistics among secondary school students. This framework serves as a basis to design new assessment and instruction. To begin with, an initial statistical reasoning framework was developed based on the five levels of statistical reasoning of Garfield’s model and four constructs of Jones et al.’s framework. This initial framework then went through eight steps of framework validation procedure modified from earlier studies. The first step was to construct an interview protocol, called the ‘technology-based statistical reasoning assessment tool’, based on the aforementioned initial framework. The second step was about conducting the first task-based interview with 10 upper secondary students. The responses of the students to the interview protocol were then analyzed in the third step. In the fourth step, the initial framework and interview protocol were revised. After that, the researcher performed the second task-based interview with the same 10 students using the amended interview protocol in the fifth step. The sixth step was to determine the statistical reasoning levels of the students for each construct. Next, the consistency of the students’ statistical reasoning levels across the four constructs was determined in the seventh step. In the eighth step, the elements of each statistical reasoning level were distinguished. Finally, a validated statistical reasoning assessment framework was formulated based on the works of Garfield and Jones et al.. These newly developed statistical reasoning framework and assessment instruments can provide the necessary guideline for instructors and researchers to plan learning goals and customize instructions in the classroom atiff UTM 313 p.
