Rahman, supervisor Civil engineering Also available in printed version Precast concrete systems are getting popular in construction due to fast completion of project. However, there are large numbers of connections in precast concrete system that can cause a problem, in term of the reliability and the cost of the connectors. This research is a preliminary study to develop an economic and reliable sleeve connection for precast concrete system. In this study a total of nine steel pipe splice sleeves were experimentally tested under incremental tensile load. Spiral were welded onto the end of sleeves to provide interlocking mechanism for the grout. This prevents the grout from slipping out of the sleeve. The embedded length of Y16 steel bar, inner-diameter of splice sleeve and pitch distance of spiral were varied to study their effect to the tensile performance. The Y16 steel bar was used as control specimen. This paper presents the results obtained from tensile test and discussion of the failure mode for each specimen. The experiment result shows that none of the specimens could achieve the required strength. However, the understandings of the causes of failures obtained from the study provide essential basis for future research snhas UTM 83 p.
