This type of soil is called dispersive soil and is usually erodible. Soil erosion is recognized as a serious problem and surface erosion almost always lead to the slope surface failure. When rainfall hits the ground, the traction force becomes greater than the cohesion or gravity forces and the particles become entrained in the fluid. When vegetation is absence, soil erosion can be significantly reduced by limiting the impact of rainfall (run-off, infiltration, erosion) and improving the properties of the surface soil by compaction or by mixing the soil with additives. This project assesses the dispersivity of three types of soil (retrieve from two locations in UTM Skudai campus and from Tapah, Perak) by pinhole and crumb test and erodibility based on particle size distribution. Soils having high proportion of silt and fine sand generally have greater potential for erosion than soil with lower proportion of silt and fine sand. Results shows that all soils contains high percentage of silt and therefore, that soils are dispersive and have highly erodible. Low permeability is increasing the risk for surface erosion. The other objective of this project is to evaluate the effect of lime on improving the dispersivity characteristics of surface soil. Results shows that lime can reduce the soil’s potential to disperse in the presence of water atiff UTM 82 p.
