In the early stage of this study, a survey was conducted on 542 students from several faculties at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to discover the features of web-based learning environment that support learning needs of the students. Result from a preliminary survey found that the characteristics chosen by the students were online discussion forum, lecture notes and assignments. Assessment of the effectiveness of the webbased learning environment involved the use of (i) questionnaires; (ii) pre and post tests; (iii) interviews; and (iv) online discussion forums. Results from the analysis of students acceptance (34 students) on learning activities showed that the medium was suitable to encourage reflective thinking (mean = 3.82), collaborative learning process (mean = 3.98) and an informal learning (mean = 3.87). The students also agreed that the learning activities could act as a tool to promote reflective thinking (mean = 3.98). Qualitative content analysis of online discussion forums was also carried out to support the research findings. The analysis found that the low-level reflective thinking (stimulated reflection, descriptive reflection I and II ) and highlevel reflective thinking (dialogic reflection and critical reflection) have increased by 29.83%. An increment of 35.02% was also achieved for low-level cognitive thinking (knowledge, comprehension and application) and 45.22% high-level cognitive thinking (analysis, synthesis and evaluation). Most students agreed that the learning activities were found to enhance their level of reflective and cognitive thinking. As shown in the pre and post tests, these activities have positively affected the students’ achievement tests (p = 0.000, a = 0.05). Responses from the interview showed that students agreed that learning activities have positively affected their learning process. Overall, the web-based collaborative learning has affected the level of reflective and cognitive thinking among students atiff UTM 368 p.
