With two powertrain: an electric motor and internal combustion engine, HEV able to decrease carbon emission and improve fuel economy. The electric motor is the key aspect in developing this technology. One of the potential electric motor that can be used in HEV is brushless DC (BLDC) motor; popular for its high efficiency and robust characteristics. BLDC motor is an electronically commutated motor. Thus it requires a motor driver. However, over the years, little studies had been done regarding BLDC motor driver specifically for hybrid electric vehicle application. Most researches tended to focus on prototyping a motor driver for a low voltage application and developing a computer simulation of the motor driver. Past researches failed to consider the effect of the surrounding temperature and the electrical noise that will increase when the motor driver employed for a high voltage application such as hybrid electric vehicle. Thus, this project aims to develop a prototype of BLDC motor driver for the HEV application emphasizing on electronic circuitry design to optimize the motor driver performance at high voltage. At the same time, a speed controller and the microcontroller program are also built to complement the motor driver design. This project establishes the feasibility of applying BLDC in HEV for future research fahmimoksen UTM 56 p.
