It is commonly acted as an alternative which used as a maintenance treatment. The problem which usually occurred in chip seal is loss of chippings. There are several factors contributed to loss of chippings such as binder rate and type of bitumen used in pre-coating the aggregates. This thesis only focused on the adhesion of 14mm of coated aggregate which by using different bitumen binder rates and different type of bitumen used in coating the aggregates. The rate of pre-coating the bitumen being used was fixed to one rate only which is 12l/m. There are three types of bitumen used in pre-coating the 14mm aggregates which were conventional bitumen 80/100, 60/70 and cutback bitumen. The laboratory test conducted were Vialit test and Pull out test. Vialit test was conducted to determine the adhesion between binder and the aggregates, while the Pull out test was conducted to evaluate the ability and the characteristic adhesive strength of binder with the aggregate under the presence of water and dust. The result showed that conventional bitumen used in pre-coating the aggregate has better adhesion with the binder. Cutback bitumen used in pre-coating the aggregates gave the least adhesion. The result from Pull out test showed that the higher the binder rate to be used, the stronger the bonds between coated aggregate and binder. It was concluded that the type of bitumen used in coating and the binder rate influences the adhesion effect. zulaihi UTM 78 p.
